The Hub is Proud to be part of the BWIN Initiative
The Becoming Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods (BWIN) project is a three year. It is an initiative developed to address the many barriers to full participation in our neighbourhoods that many newcomers and immigrants experience. The overall project consists of different neighbourhood specific initiatives taken on by a consortium of 12 neighbourhood houses the lower mainland.
Funding for this initiative has been generously provided by the Ministry of the Attorney General, Settlement and Multiculturalism Division.
The Oak Avenue Neighbourhood Hub has taken a food security approach to this initiative by offering a number of Community Kitchen programs. These include a Senior's Cooking Club, a Multi-cultural Cooking Club, an African-Specific Community Kitchen and a Burmese-Specific Community Kitchen. All these programs provide an opportunity for members to connect and share knowledge and stories while helping them establish functional ties with people in the community. Our goal is to engage people to make our neighbourhood a healthier and more vibrant place.
BWIN PROGRAMS at the Hub:
Cooking Club for Seniors - Focus on healthy and hearty soup making (2nd Circle)
Multicultural Community Kitchen (3nd circle) - Focus on how to make delicious and affordable meals for your families
Burmese-Specific Community Kitchen - Focus on learning healthy Canadian cooking
African-Specific Community Kitchen - Celebrate their unique cultures through food
About the Hub
The Oak Avenue Neighbourhood Hub evolved out of the Mission Board of Oak Avenue United Church in 2004.
It now is a registered non-profit society providing a variety of services to the community.
The purpose of the Hub is to provide a range of services for people in the community as part of a continuum of support for all ages. The hub serves as a place for other organizations and agencies to offer programs
and fosters a unified vision of promoting healthy community development. Each program and service works in intentional cooperation with the Neighbourhood Hub to ensure that the needs of people in the community are being met in a way that is integrated and comprehensive.
Plans for the Hub include free or low-cost programs for school-age children including a homework club. Programming is currently being developed for seniors and youth as well as other drop-in programs for the community. We are also further developing our resource centre to include more information on community programming.
We want to engage the Cedar Hills community of Surrey more fully and provide opportunities for community development activities.
We invite you to join us in making the Hub a place of home and hope by becoming a member of the society, volunteering your time, donating in-kind resources or funds to the society.

Day of Caring
The United Way Day of Caring held at the end of September saw 16 volunteers from Terasen Gas at the Hub. It turned out to be a wonderful sunny day and the crew was really there to work. They leveled the ground and laid cement block for the new storage shed and assembled it. They even installed a small retaining wall to stop the dirt from washing down on the shed area and to help keep it clean.
They closed in the area under the 3 – 5 sun-deck with lattice and installed a door so the staff can store outdoor toys under there. Several volunteers went into the 3 - 5 Day Care and painted the kid’s cubbies. Several others painted the lower part of the building and the front stairs of the 3 - 5 Day Care. The difference was outstanding and it looks so good now.
Another group of volunteers worked on the flower beds and along the back of the building to get it all cleaned up. Then they generously went and bought some plants and bulbs so we have pansies in bloom now with lots of bulbs to come up in the spring.
Others planted several cedar shrubs to replace several that had died around the playground area.
We now have the bathroom and the galley in the Hub Centre freshly painted and it looks really nice. The painters were wonderful as they were so tidy and did a great job.
We enjoyed muffins and coffee all morning and we served soup and hamburgers to the hungry volunteers for lunch. It was a great day in all.
Our friends at Terasen were very impressed with all that is happening at the Hub. They even put pictures and an article about their day working with us in their newsletter.
They said they were really impressed with the Clothes Closet and wanted to help promote it, as they have so many employees that have children themselves.
All went really well, and they said that they would love to come back to our site for another project in the future. At the end of the day, the Day Care presented a card that the children had made to thank them. The volunteers were really thrilled with this and said that that was the best thank you of all!
